Lemons are among the most consumed citrus fruits. With their yellow color and unique taste they offer a range of uses and health benefits.
They contain, for example, large amounts of vitamin C and flavonoids, which improve the absorption of other nutrients in the intestines.
You can combine a lemon or its juice with other juices, or simply dilute it in water and drink it – let it be the first thing you do in the morning.
We wrote about the health benefits of this routine here.
Mistakes people make when storing fruit and vegetables
Most people store lemons in a bowl with other fruit left in the kitchen or living room on the table. However, this is not the best way to store them.
Today we will reveal an incredibly easy method that will keep your lemons fresh and tasty for a relatively long time, usually without problems for a whole month or more.
People often store tomatoes, onions or even potatoes in the refrigerator, although for these crops that is not the most suitable method.
On the other hand, lemons are stored outside the refrigerator, which again is completely wrong.
Indeed, lemons stored at room temperature lose their nutritional properties and freshness after just 5 days.
Fortunately, there is a simple method that will help you significantly extend their shelf life.
How to best store lemons
To keep lemons fresh as long as possible, put them into a resealable plastic bag or a regular bag, seal it, and place it in the refrigerator.
This way the lemons will retain their firmness, juiciness and flavor for a long time.
Sealing them in a plastic bag reduces the rate of their respiration. In other words, the ripening of the fruits slows down.
However, there is no need to seal them vacuum-tight. If respiration were to stop completely, aging would actually accelerate.
There should be some air in the bag, but not much, and the air should not be exchanged. Therefore the bag should be sealed.
Conclusion
Lemons are nowadays often sold in nets. Many people who also store them in the fridge simply put the lemons into the refrigerator in the net as soon as they get home.
However, that is a mistake. They should transfer them from the net into a plastic bag, or put the whole net inside it, and then seal it.
