Autumn and winter months are a period of frequent colds, which are often accompanied by increased mucus production in the lungs and bronchi. This can significantly make breathing difficult and affect everyday life.

If you are looking for a quick and effective solution, we have a recipe for a homemade syrup that will clear the airways and help you and your children breathe easier. This natural remedy is simple to prepare, effective, and gentle on the body.

Ingredients for preparing the syrup

You will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of hibiscus (marshmallow, Althaea officinalis)
  • 1 teaspoon of ground flax seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of sage
  • 1 lemon sliced into rounds (without peel)
  • 250 ml of clean water
  • 250 ml of maple syrup or 250 g of brown sugar

Procedure for preparing the homemade syrup

  1. Prepare the base:
Pour the water into a pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat.

  2. Add the herbs:
Once the water begins to boil, add the hibiscus, sage and flax seeds. Reduce the heat, cover the pot with a lid and let the mixture simmer gently for 2–3 minutes.

  3. Strain the liquid:
After the time has passed, strain the liquid and add the maple syrup or brown sugar to it.

  4. Dissolve the sweetener:
Return the pot to the stove and stir until the sugar or syrup is completely dissolved.

  5. Finishing:
Once the mixture reaches a boil again, add the lemon slices, stir, cover with a lid and turn off the heat.

  6. Storage:
Let the syrup cool completely and pour it into a sterilized glass container. Store it in the refrigerator.

Dosage and use

Take 1 tablespoon of this syrup 3x daily until your condition improves and the mucus begins to subside. The prepared amount will yield approximately 50 tablespoons – that means 10 days for one person or 5 days when sharing the syrup between two.

Why this syrup works?

  • Hibiscus soothes irritated airways and promotes expectoration.
  • Flax seeds provide a protective film on the mucous membranes and support their regeneration.
  • Sage has antiseptic properties that help with respiratory tract infections.
