50 years ago Dr. Broda Barnes studied disorders of the endocrine system and especially dealt with hypothyroidism, that is decreased function of the thyroid gland.

He published several books in which he claimed that hypothyroidism is a highly underdiagnosed disease in society, responsible for a number of other associated health problems.

He estimated that up to 40% of the population suffer from decreased thyroid function compared to official statistics, which report only 5%.

Barnes therefore developed a home diagnostic test that became known as the “Barnes basal temperature test”.

It is very simple, quick, and can provide information about the function of your thyroid gland.

Bernese Test

Before you lie down in bed in the evening, place a thermometer for measuring body temperature next to you on the bedside table.

If you still use that old mercury one, shake it down well so that it shows 35C.

When you wake up in the morning, do not get out of bed, but immediately place the thermometer under your armpit. Hold it there for 10 minutes. If you have a newer digital one, keep it there until it beeps.

However, the most accurate temperature will be measured by an infrared ear thermometer like this one.

The temperature you measure is called the “early morning basal temperature”. Normally it should be between 36.6 and 36.8˚C.

Note

Be aware, however, that infectious diseases, women during menstruation, and some chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis can cause an increase in this basal temperature

Test result
1. Your thyroid functions normally if the temperature is between 36.6 and 36.8˚C.

2. If you find that the temperature is below 36.6˚C, it means that your thyroid is working weaker than it should, i.e. hypothyroidism (reduced thyroid function).

Also bear in mind that conditions such as depression, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, chronic headaches, memory and concentration problems, or hair loss are all symptoms of decreased thyroid activity.

3. If your temperature is higher than 36.8˚C, then either your thyroid is working too fast (hyperthyroidism) or you have some inflammation in the body.

Conclusion
It is recommended that you perform this test for at least 3 consecutive days if you want an accurate result.

If you find a deviation, either up or down, consult your doctor. He can send you for specific biochemical blood tests.

Adequate iodine is especially necessary for proper thyroid function.

Besides iodine, a stress-free life, selenium, vitamin A, magnesium and B vitamins are also very important.
