The largest producer of rice in the world is China, which produces more than 200 million tons of rice annually.

Recently the newspaper The Korean Times published a report about how some Chinese companies
manufacture artificial rice from plastics and potato starch, which they then enrich with rice flavor. They then add such toxic rice to ordinary rice to confuse customers and thus increase their profits.

The report triggered further investigations aimed at uncovering whether the presented information was true or not. The final findings were shocking.

Some Chinese rice contained a fairly large amount of plastics. The question then is how
to identify whether your rice also contains the mentioned harmful impurities? Ň

Fortunately, there are differences between natural and artificial rice that will help you spot the artificial one.

Test č.1: Voda

Take a tablespoon of rice and pour it into a bowl of water.
If the rice sinks to the bottom, it is natural. If it remains floating on the surface, it is probably artificial rice.

Test č.2: Oheň

Try to light a few grains of rice on fire. If they do not burn, the rice is real. If, however, they start to burn, that indicates the rice is fake.

Test č.3: Drcení

Crush the rice grains. If you end up with only a white powder, it is natural rice. If, in addition to the powder, you see yellow spots, it is likely artificial rice.

Test č.4: Plíseň

Cook a handful of rice and place it in a bowl which you leave uncovered in the kitchen in a bright spot for several days. If mold forms on it after a while, it is real rice. If it does not mold even after a long time, it is probably artificial rice.

The tests listed are simple and easy. We recommend trying several of them at once, because a single test may not always reliably determine the result. For example, even real rice grains can sometimes float on the surface.
