Scientists have been intensively analyzing the effects of beetroot on human health for years. In fact, according to them it is one of the most significant sources of antioxidants that we grow in our latitudes.

Beetroot helps with weight loss, but it also has a significant effect in preventing the development of cancer.

Beetroot and extracts from it are included in many products that we buy for a considerable amount of money at the pharmacy. However, it is best to enjoy it as it occurs in nature – in the form of vegetables from our fields. Its effects on our health are definitely worth it. We will advise what needs to be done to make it the healthiest.

Improves vision

Many studies have examined the substances contained in the root of beetroot and have found that it strengthens eye health and improves vision even in later life.

You may have even encountered your eye doctor recommending this food for eye health.

Eat beetroot as often as you can – it can do all of the following:

  • detoxifies the body and acts as a strong antioxidant,
  • prevents constipation and its high fiber content benefits gut health,
  • lowers levels of harmful cholesterol,
  • helps with weight loss, provides energy and speeds up digestion and metabolism,
  • contains the compound betaine, which regulates fat metabolism, cleanses the liver and also helps lower blood pressure,
  • important in pregnancy – contains folic acid, which is essential for proper fetal development,
  • treats atherosclerosis – benefits the health of arteries and blood vessels, improving their elasticity and blood flow,
  • helps with urinary tract infections – has a diuretic effect,
  • analgesic effect – acts against pain,
  • contains a set of unique trace elements that are not found together anywhere else,
  • rich in iodine – important in the treatment of thyroid disorders.

It matters how and when you eat it!

It is no surprise that beetroot contains more healing substances in the autumn, shortly after it is harvested from the ground. Even then it is very beneficial for our health, especially during the winter months.

It still holds that beetroot is healthiest raw – which is why juices and salads made from it are considered the healthiest. According to nutrition experts and also doctors, however, beetroot remains very healing even after cooking – it is not true that heat destroys all the good in it, but you do need to know how to prepare it.

However, nutrients must be preserved by proper preparation.

It is true that you get the most out of beetroot if you cook it whole in its skin in a pressure cooker, or bake it in foil. If you peel it before cooking, or bake it without the protective layer of foil, you lose a number of valuable nutrients. However, it is not true that beetroot in borscht, canned, peeled and boiled like potatoes, or baked without foil has no nutrients. It is still healthy and beneficial for the body, but the ratio of nutrients in it changes.
