The World Health Organization (WHO) has published instructions for making disinfectant.

Protective equipment and disinfectant products are still scarce goods, so people are looking for ways to make them at home.

You usually cannot get all the ingredients in one place, but they should be available in stores that remain open during quarantine – pharmacies and drugstores – residents of smaller villages and towns have an advantage in this case, where the drugstore is usually also combined with the sale of paint and varnish.

What you will need

  • pure alcohol: that is 96% ethanol or 99.8% isopropyl alcohol (available at drugstores, paint and varnish shops)
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide (available at pharmacies)
  • 98% glycerol (you may know it as glycerin and it is available at pharmacies)
  • sterilized or boiled water
  • a clean, sterilized container with a lid
  • a measuring cup, syringe (if you don’t have one, you can do without, but it makes the work easier)

The proportions are for making one liter of disinfectant.

How to make disinfectant gel

  • Prepare 833 ml of alcohol (or 752 ml of isopropyl alcohol) and pour it into at least a one-liter container.
  • Slowly add 42 ml of hydrogen peroxide to it and mix well.
  • Then add 15 ml of glycerol – it is better to use a syringe for this, because it is very thick and without it it is not easy to measure this dose.
  • When you have done that, top up the mixture with boiled water to a liter, close the container and mix very well.
  • At this point you can pour it into smaller bottles that can be carried with you.
  • The solution should be left to stand for three days, but if necessary it works immediately.
