The State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL) on its official site regularly informs Slovaks about new orders or measures related to the use of medicines.

The latest shocking announcement appeared on their website about the withdrawal of up to 34 antibiotics that are commonly prescribed to patients in our country.

Specifically, these are fluoroquinolone antibiotics – they are said to cause serious adverse effects that affect primarily the muscles, joints, and the nervous and sensory systems. After taking them, a patient may even experience inflammation or rupture of a tendon, joint pain and swelling, difficulty walking, fatigue, depression, or disorders of sleep, memory, or sensory perception.

“The European Commission has ordered restrictions on the use of quinolone and fluoroquinolone antibiotics in all EU member states based on a review of their adverse effects by the European Medicines Agency,” the SÚKL institute explained the reasons for restricting the use of up to 34 dangerous drugs that are allegedly very frequently prescribed here.
