Czechs are obsessed with exotica. Yet they forget the treasures of their own gardens and forests, which are often more valuable than all the oranges and lemons in the world. Today we will talk about angrešt. The unobtrusive shrub bearing hairy green berries used to be a favorite fruit in our gardens. However, it is increasingly being forgotten. And that is a big mistake. This green fuzzball is in fact one of the strongest antioxidants in the world.

Besides all the benefits resulting from ascorbic acid, it also abounds in a number of other health benefits stemming from the contained plant pigment, fiber and other substances.

Angrešt – 10 effects on health

Gooseberries strengthen the vascular system
The human body needs silica to form and maintain a strong vascular system. Gooseberries are very effective precisely on damaged or weakened arteries and veins. If visible “spider” varicose veins appear, a week-long gooseberry cure can slow the weakening of the vascular system.

Long-term sufficient intake of silica may have a preventive effect against the development of vascular system diseases.

Gooseberries support digestion
Fiber is known for its role in digestive health and in the regularity of bowel movements. The amount of fiber in gooseberries (3.6 g per 100 grams) can certainly support regular bowel movements and reduce the risk of constipation. Gooseberries also cleanse and detoxify the intestines.

Gooseberries strengthen the immune system

The antioxidant properties of gooseberries support a strong immune system. The immune system defends and fights against harmful organisms that try to attack the body and cause illness. Antioxidants also try to neutralize attackers to protect the immune cells themselves.

Gooseberries protect eye health
The vitamin A content found in gooseberries supports eye health, especially reducing the risk of night blindness, a condition that makes it difficult or even impossible to see in relatively low or dim light. In addition, vitamin C can prevent the formation of cataracts or clouding of the eye lenses, which impair vision.

Gooseberries against aging
Vitamin E plays a major role in skin health and can reduce sun damage while supporting collagen production, maintaining skin integrity and reducing the risk of wrinkles. Vitamin A reduces the likelihood of wrinkle formation.

Gooseberries protect the brain
Like all berries, gooseberries have many antioxidants that help protect against cellular damage and oxidative stress. This antioxidant effect plays a key role in brain health and cognitive functions, such as improved memory. Gooseberries may even help protect people from serious degenerative brain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Gooseberries help reduce weight
People often question fruit intake when trying to lose weight. But you can be sure that fruit (and gooseberries) can be an effective aid for weight loss. Gooseberries are rich in fiber and at the same time low in calories, which ultimately supports weight loss when combined with a well-balanced diet and exercise.

Gooseberries maintain healthy blood pressure

Gooseberries contain a lot of potassium and have a low sodium content. One cup of gooseberries contains 297 milligrams of potassium compared to 1.5 mg of sodium. This helps relax blood vessels and maintain proper blood pressure.

Gooseberries help you sleep better
Gooseberries aid sleep thanks to their high magnesium content, a mineral directly linked to improved sleep quality, duration and restfulness. Gooseberries also help regulate metabolism, helping to reduce sleep disorders and the occurrence of insomnia.

Gooseberries for healthy hair
Adequate intake of vitamin C not only improves the immune system but also creates and maintains collagen, which is a vital protein in hair. Vitamin A, which gooseberries also contain, protects hair follicles from damage caused by free radicals. After consuming gooseberries, hair becomes stronger, shinier and less prone to drying out.
