While for a time aloe vera was all the rage, and when it wasn’t present somewhere we found that suspicious, after a while a flood of slanders arrived claiming it probably has no positive effects on human health. But it does. And you can also make a delicious drink from it!

Here’s how it is.

Aloe vera is one of the traditional medicinal plants that contains plenty of vitamins

It contains some vitamins from the B, C and E groups and minerals (chromium, manganese, calcium, magnesium or selenium) and it can truly have a beneficial effect on our health – it can, for example, soothe irritated skin or help with ongoing and systematic detoxification of the body when used internally. On the other hand, it’s a question how much of the active substances actually make it into the products we end up buying in stores, whether in groceries, drugstores or pharmacies.

What can aloe vera do?

Precisely because in the vast majority of cases it’s not certain how much extract from aloe vera is found in finished products, it’s best to make your own preparations. If you already grow the plant, you’re halfway there. If not, definitely give it a try. Growing it isn’t difficult, if only because it’s originally a desert plant. It doesn’t need much care.

And finally, what it offers:

  • Soothes irritated skin (for example in cases of eczema) and heals wounds (from stings to grazes to cuts), and also helps with burns.
  • Helps with excess acidity in the body, with stomach ulcers or inflammations of the digestive tract.
  • Supports muscle regeneration, relieves joint pain.
  • Relieves bloating and loss of appetite.
  • Benefits the liver.
  • Supports the absorption of vitamins, minerals and trace elements that the body needs.
  • Application to the scalp can prevent dandruff and hair loss.
  • When consumed it strengthens the immune system and is also suitable as a supplement to the treatment of viral illnesses.
  • Lowers blood sugar levels. It’s perfect even for diabetics.

Preparing a homemade aloe vera drink is easy and worth it!

Aloe vera drink

What you need: aloe pulp, mineral water, honey or another sweetener

How to:

  • Cut the leaves you have lengthwise and scoop out the pulp.
  • Then blend it in a blender. Add mineral water to the pulp so that you have 1 part aloe and 5 parts mineral water.
  • If you want, you can sweeten the drink with sugar, honey or another sweetener.
  • Blend once more and it’s ready!
  • Aloe vera gel for wounds
  • What you need: gel from a large, thicker leaf, about 50 ml of coconut oil

How to:

  • Cut open a larger, thicker leaf and let it dry.
  • Scoop out just the gel with a spoon, without the pulp.
  • Let the coconut oil „warm up“ at room temperature, it will be easier to work with.
  • Mix the aloe gel with the oil, it’s nothing complicated. Store it in the refrigerator.
  • Aloe vera has a wide range of uses; we’ll definitely get to the others in one of the following articles.
