Many of us would like to grow plants of various kinds in our homes, but we do not have a garden available. Or we want to enjoy the pleasure of growing even during the winter season indoors in our apartment or house.
Today we introduce 10 low-maintenance herbs that do very well even in plain water and without soil.
Just create suitable conditions for them and they will reward us with their beauty or scent.
What do we need?
Water – avoid using water that is too chlorinated, which is harmful to the plants. It is better to let the water stand overnight before use and the most ideal is to use rainwater.
Containers – bowls or jars are perfectly sufficient. You can wrap the glass, for example, in newspaper so that the roots are in a dark environment.
Cuttings – some are best obtained fresh in the spring, others during the summer, and some even in the autumn.
Some need to be placed in water immediately, others can be transported for a while without further measures. Cuttings and their properties vary, so read the instructions below carefully.
10 easy-care plants
1) Peppermint – Very popular not only in medicine but also in the food industry. This is mainly because it contains a lot of menthol. By the way, menthol is extremely volatile, and therefore this plant pleasantly scents the whole apartment. Growing peppermint in water is easy; just put fresh cuttings in water and let the plant take root.
2) Curly mint (spearmint) – Another variety of mint. In fact, peppermint is a hybrid bred from curly mint and water mint.
3) Oregano – This pungent herb is worth growing indoors because its leaves can be used to flavor almost all vegetables. Take fresh cuttings and place them in water. Once the plant has put down roots, it will also begin to grow quickly.
4) Basil – Basil loves the warmth of your kitchen and will grow there as long as it has enough light. Take cuttings at any time before the plant begins to flower. By the way, growing cuttings in water is an ideal way to preserve basil through the winter.
5) Sage – Place small cuttings to root in water as early as spring; even a very small number of cuttings will suffice. Then keep the plant in a well-lit and ventilated place, because the plant is prone to mold.
6) Stevia – It’s good to have this sweet plant in the house and use it to sweeten teas, coffee, and various other drinks. Take cuttings from actively growing soft shoots and place them in water. Provide them with a warm spot and plenty of light – that’s where this exotic plant is happiest.
7) Lemon balm – This herb is a welcome refreshment in every household, especially in winter. The leaves are great for making tea. Take cuttings in spring or autumn. Keep the containers in a warm place that gets enough light but indirect sunlight. It can take up to 3-4 weeks for lemon balm to put down roots. Keep the water clean and change it regularly.
8) Tarragon – Take cuttings at the beginning of spring. Autumn cuttings are also fine, but root formation will take longer. Keep the cuttings in a warm place that is brightly lit.
9) Thyme – You need fresh cuttings from a still-green plant. Old cuttings that are already firm and brown may not root. The best time to take cuttings is in mid-spring and during early summer, before the plant begins to flower.
However, thin thyme stems dry out quickly, so put them into water immediately after cutting.
10) Rosemary – Half-woody rosemary cuttings do take longer to root, but spring cuttings should root more quickly. Either way it’s worth the effort, because rosemary grows very well and only needs a sunny spot.
