Walnuts have rightly earned the title of superfood.
They contain the full spectrum of beneficial vitamins
A, B1, B2, B12, B 15, C, K, E, but also substances like carotene, linolenic acid, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc. The unique combination of these and other substances found in walnuts is a very effective and tasty means of strengthening the body and health. In fact, a Harvard study claims that simply eating a few nuts several times a week will help you live longer.
If you’re lucky enough to have harvested walnuts, don’t hesitate — store them for long months, even years. We have the best tips for you on how to do it!
Nuts preserved dry
You’ll have the nuts on hand whenever you need them. You don’t have to worry that the nuts will go musty or moldy.
We need:
- clean jars for canning
- shelled nuts
Procedure:
Simply place the nuts into the jars. Then put the filled jars into the oven and set it to 70 degrees. Leave them in the oven for 10 minutes, then place lids on the jars (do not tighten) and put them back in the oven for another 10 minutes.
Remove from the oven, seal tightly and store.
If you want, you can also preserve dry in the microwave. Just place the open jars into the microwave and leave two jars inside for 2.5 minutes at full power. Remove them with a cloth, seal them and turn them upside down with the lid facing down. When the jar cools, you can store it.
Freezing
Shelled walnuts can be stored in the freezer. At a constant temperature below freezing they will easily last even half a year without any reduction in their taste or appearance quality. The advantage is that frozen walnuts can be used immediately in cooking; they can be very easily sliced and grated. Store them in the freezer in a tightly closed plastic container, or in a plastic bag. It is important that they do not come into contact with other foods stored in your freezer.
Storage in the refrigerator
If you don’t have a freezer at home or at the cottage, you can also use the refrigerator. However, here the nuts will last significantly shorter, about 3 – 4 months.
Soaking in honey — they then become extra healing
An interesting solution is to soak walnuts in honey. Just put them into a jar and mix with honey in a 1:1 ratio. Nuts consumed this way every day can strengthen the immune system, improve overall health and are an immediate source of healthy energy. Enjoy them especially in the morning. They are also an excellent ingredient for cakes.
How to get even more out of nuts?
In combination with warm milk (with the array of nutrients that milk contains), nuts act as neutralizers of toxins in the human body. In this combination they also speed up recovery from inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract and help improve acute conditions in patients with tuberculosis. For strengthening immunity and supporting detoxification, the combination of nuts with bee honey is also suitable.
If in the morning you enjoy chopped walnuts with cottage cheese and raisins, you will obtain a very effective remedy for supporting proper heart muscle function, regeneration of the liver, the nervous system and the prevention of atherosclerosis. You will also benefit your eyesight — it has been found that the combination of nutrients in this mixture helps prevent age-related decline in visual acuity.
We must also not forget that nuts are a very useful food in the treatment of anemia, for proper psychological development, and they improve memory and attention.
Valuable substances from nuts — just as in the case of kernels and seeds — are obtained and absorbed into the body only when the nut is sufficiently processed — by chewing in the mouth. Therefore do not worry unnecessarily if a piece of nut gets stuck between your teeth. The substances you obtain from it in this way are a real treasure for your health.
However, don’t overdo it with nuts — in large amounts they can cause unpleasant allergic reactions and are not suitable for people suffering from colitis. Remember that their strength does not lie in large quantities.
