Each of us wants our plants to thrive, bloom and grow beautifully. A great source of excellent tips and wisdom are experienced growers who can make their plants bloom almost continuously, even without artificial fertilizers and store-bought products. Their secret lies in one surprising ingredient – ordinary sugar.

A teaspoon in every pot

Almost all flowering houseplants love sweets (even flowering cacti) – of course not in large doses, but a little sugar in the watering can can stimulate them and boost their energy. You can simply add the sugar before watering – ½ teaspoon per flowerpot with a diameter of at least 10 cm (just sprinkle it on the soil) or prepare a sugar watering solution. ½ teaspoon of sugar per 250 ml of water. Use as a stimulant once a month, in the period before flowering (when the plant starts to set buds).

In the garden

If the plants in your garden look unhealthy and nodules appear on their roots, they have probably fallen victim to a nematode invasion. These tiny worms attack the roots.

You can prevent attacks by these inconspicuous pests if you create an inhospitable environment for them with sugar. Scatter roughly 2 kilograms of sugar on every 25 square meters of garden. Microorganisms that feed on the sugar will thus increase the amount of organic matter in the soil and, through their activity, suppress the dangerous invaders.

Gardener and florist in one

Are your flowers failing and you don’t know what to do? Take a closer look at their roots; the problem may be nematodes attacking them. Try adding sugar to the soil, which will support the activity of beneficial bacteria and microorganisms. They will create a maximally hostile environment for further nematodes. Sugar is suitable to add together with vinegar to the water from time to time during regular watering. Approximately two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of vinegar per half liter of water will provide extra nourishment for the flowers. And to keep them beautiful not only in the garden but also in the vase, add sugar with vinegar to it for longer freshness.

Quickly clean greasy, dirty hands

If you have a lot of grease, dirt or paint on your hands, simply and thoroughly clean them by sprinkling a small amount of granulated sugar into your palms and adding the same amount of olive oil. Then gently and carefully rub your hands. Finally, wipe them carefully and dry. The sugar crystals act as an abrasive and help the oil remove grease, paint and dirt. Your hands will be clean, soft and supple again.

Mosquito trap – works indoors and outdoors

This trap attracts much more than your blood. Just place it in several spots, for example around the terrace, or even inside an apartment. Believe that mosquitoes cannot resist this “treat”, but they will not be able to get back out.

We need:

  • 3 dl of water – about 1 cup
  • ¼ cup of brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of dried yeast (can be fresh)
  • a clear two-liter PET bottle

How to:

Cut the bottle in half. Put the brown sugar into warm water and stir until dissolved. Let the prepared sweet solution cool and then pour it into the bottom part of the bottle. Add the yeast, which does not need to be mixed. The yeast produces carbon dioxide, which very strongly attracts mosquitoes. Insert the top half of the bottle upside down into the bottom half. If they don’t hold together, seal them with insulating tape. Wrap the bottom part of the bottle with something black, or simply paint it black. The top part remains clear. The whole trick is that mosquitoes love hiding in dark places, especially where they sense carbon dioxide. I tend to portion the mixture into several bottles.

Elixir of life for your plants

We need:

  • 50 g of fresh yeast
  • 1 liter of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar

Procedure:

  • Stir and let sit for 1 day.
  • Then dilute in a ratio of 1:5 (1 part nutrient, 5 parts water).
  • Water each shrub with half a liter of the mixture.

If you don’t have fresh yeast, the mixture can be prepared from 1 teaspoon of dried yeast. This amount of fertilizer is enough for 10 plants. The roots of the plants are nourished by this tonic for the entire season.

Great help for bees

Honey bees get very tired while collecting pollen and then need more vitality to return to the hive. That is why we often find many of them on the ground lifeless – they did not have enough energy to return to the hive.
To protect the bees and give them enough energy, provide them with sugar and water.
Just mix 2 tablespoons of white granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon of water and leave a spoon freely placed with this mixture where a bee can reach it.
