It’s still too early for that, but this is my advice for planting onions in rows – if you plant in spring and haven’t planted onions since November. My grandmother did this, as do I. I’ve been growing onions for years and with this method I always have a big harvest.
Bath in a saline solution
Prepare all the seedlings and dissolve three cups of salt in a 10-liter container of water.
Mix this solution, place all the onions intended for planting into it and let them soak for 1-2 days to achieve the best possible results.
Do not pour out the saline solution, but before planting pour it onto the ground or sprinkle ordinary salt. This will help prevent onion flies and other parasites from appearing during growth. This serves to disinfect the soil before planting.
How to speed up growth and increase the onion’s resistance
If you have a problem with parasites, people in the village typically dip the onions from the saline solution into a weak 2% potassium permanganate solution for 10–20 minutes before planting. It disinfects and protects the seeds from possible diseases in the soil and also has a stimulating effect.
If you don’t have potassium permanganate, soak the seed at least in water before planting (temperature 20–25 ° C). Vegetable seed mixes contain chemicals that prevent germination; these are washed out by soaking, and the seeds swell and germinate quickly. Soak onion seeds 30–60 hours before planting and let them air-dry for about 1 hour.
