Back when lavender cultivation here wasn’t as widespread as it is today and you couldn’t commonly buy products from this miraculous little plant. My aunt brought seeds years ago from a holiday in the former Yugoslavia and has been growing lavender ever since.

Lavender and Alpa

Whenever she dried the fragrant heads, she set a few aside and in a small container covered them with alcohol or plain Alpa. At the time I had no idea that one day I would lovingly prepare this recipe myself. Lavender tincture must not be missing in our family. It is extremely useful. Even if you only have dried lavender flowers available, make your own healing mixture as well.

We need:

  • Dried or fresh lavender (I use dried heads, but of course you can use fresh).
  • Pour alcohol (Alpa, ethanol, schnapps) over 30 grams of dried flowers and let it macerate in a closed container for two weeks.
  • After two weeks, strain the mixture and pour the liquid into a dark bottle.

What is the tincture good for?

  • muscle relaxation, acts against muscle cramps,
  • excellent for full-body massage,
  • rub it on your temples when you have a headache, the pain is gone in a moment, massaging the temples (for headache relief),
  • rub pulsating spots on your body before sleep and you will sleep better,
  • the same procedure will protect you from mosquitoes and pesky flies,
  • just a few drops of the tincture are enough to heal a cold sore,
  • to rub on joints and aching bones – for example after fractures,
  • my aunt also used it to relieve carpal tunnel pain,
  • used for gout, rheumatism and nerve inflammation,
  • for flu or sore throat, it’s enough to gargle with this liquid,
  • fantastic for healing wounds, abrasions and for disinfection,
  • it’s also great if you put it into a spray bottle and spray into the wardrobe where you keep clothes – it’s an excellent remedy against moths,
  • if you spray into shoes or on the couch, you will remove odors and a lovely scent will spread through the whole apartment (but be careful that
  • the lavender doesn’t stain your laundry, use it on darker materials).
