Baking soda is a safe and effective natural remedy that can be successfully used in the garden to fight certain pests, diseases and weeds. It is harmless to people and animals and, unlike chemical preparations, does not harm bees either. Use it as a base for effective preparations. Here are 5 popular tips on how you can use it at home and in the garden.

1. Baking soda for killing pests

Baking soda solution is successfully used to kill pests. It is effective on aphids, mites and whiteflies. Aphids, as herbivorous insects, feed on crops and ornamental plants including flowers grown in gardens, and at home. They are easy to recognize because they always occur in colonies. Depending on the species, these insects can be black, green, yellow or orange.

Preparation of solutions against pests

1. Add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 1 liter of warm water. Then add 1/2 teaspoon of oil, shake the solution and use it.

2. Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 2 liters of warm water. To the resulting solution add a few drops of dish soap or 2 ml of tar soap. Shake the solution and use it.

3. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 4 liters of water. Stir the solution and use it.

Spraying the solution of baking soda on pests is done with a hand sprayer. Repeat the spray several times at intervals of 3 to 4 days.

2. Baking soda for fighting plant diseases

Baking soda solutions help fight fungal plant diseases. They are used, for example, in the fight against powdery mildew.

Preparation of the solution:

Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 5 ml of tar soap to 1 liter of warm water. Shake and spray.

The spray against fungal diseases also needs to be repeated several times.

3. Baking soda for killing weeds

Baking soda is also used as a means to kill weeds in places such as gaps between stones or between tiles. After removing weeds, sprinkle baking soda on the spots. This treatment significantly limits their further development. Repeat the sprinkling several times because natural remedies do not act as quickly as chemicals. It is best to apply the soda in the early evening when the air temperature drops and the wind dies down.

4. Baking soda for killing ants

Ants are not considered pests, but when there are too many of them, they hinder plant growth and can damage plants. Furthermore, when present in large numbers in the garden they are unpleasant. From the experience of many gardeners it has emerged that baking soda is very effective against ants. Just sprinkle the places where the ants come out and where there are many of them.

5. Baking soda prolongs the freshness of cut flowers

Another way to use baking soda is to pour it into a vase with cut flowers. It will extend their lifespan and they will stay fresh for a long time. Pour approximately 1/2 teaspoon of soda into the vase and stir.
