A visit to the dentist isn’t a very happy solution at the moment and, in general, visiting any clinic is not recommended unless it’s a really serious condition. But what to do if a toothache hits you while in quarantine? Anyone who’s experienced it knows how such pain can throw you off. However, there are effective remedies you can find even in your home supplies.

My grandfather’s miracle water

My grandfather used to simply steep cloves in Alpa or in plum brandy and would always “swish” it in his mouth for a while each night before bed. I make a mouthwash that I use every night after brushing my teeth. Just a small measure – hold it in your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out.

We need:

  • 200 ml boiled water
  • 1 tablespoon of cloves
  • 7 drops of propolis
  • 5 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 5 drops of tea tree essential oil

Procedure:

The basis is preparing a strong clove tea.

Put the cloves into the water and place over the flame. When the water boils, reduce the heat and simmer for another 5 minutes on low heat. Then turn off the flame, cover, and let this tea cool completely.

When the tea has steeped and cooled, strain it and add the other ingredients to the liquid. Mix and store in a sealable glass container. The mouthwash will keep for 15 – 18 days.

Pain remedy – works immediately

To make our pain-relief remedy you will need the following items:

  • coconut oil
  • clove

Procedure:

  • Pour 1 teaspoon of coconut oil into a bowl and add 1/2 teaspoon of clove powder to it.
  • If you don’t have powder, only whole cloves, chop them into very small pieces.
  • Mix the contents well until a smooth paste forms.
  • Apply this paste to the sore area of the gum, the tooth, and the surrounding area.
  • Repeat the procedure three times a day.

How does it work?

Coconut oil and its antibacterial properties

It helps neutralize the bacteria that cause inflammation.

Clove contains the compound eugenol, which has strong analgesic (pain-suppressing) effects.

In the case of severe pain, you can intensify the effect of the recipe by chewing a clove directly in your mouth for a few minutes. This accelerates the release of eugenol directly to the site of pain.

Sage and clove

Sage is an excellent natural remedy for coughs and respiratory infections, can alleviate asthma symptoms, relaxes the body, reduces sweating, and the compounds it contains are also beneficial for beauty. Chewing sage leaves has long been used in dental care. Sage helps with gum inflammation, has a pronounced soothing and healing effect, and acts as a natural prevention against tooth decay. In this recipe it will also help you with pain.

We need:

  • 1 cup of fresh sage leaves or dried sage
  • 200 ml alcohol (available at the pharmacy or you can use 40% vodka)
  • 15 aromatic cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ¾ l of boiling distilled water

Procedure:

  • Wash the sage leaves and chop them finely (or use dried sage).
  • Transfer into a clean, sealable glass container and pour boiling water over them.
  • Add the cloves and cinnamon, close the container and leave it to sit overnight.
  • The next day, strain the liquid through a cloth and add the alcohol. Store in a sealable container.

More grandmother’s tips

1. Strong alcohol – You can use Alpa as well. Rinse your mouth with it, or rub the area around the sore tooth. You can also soak a piece of cotton wool and apply it to the sore spot.

2. Mint and sage tea – Brew a strong tea from these herbs and let it cool. Hold the lukewarm drink in your mouth, or use it to rinse your mouth.

3. Potatoes – Allegedly helps especially with gum inflammation. Just grate it into small pieces and place it in your mouth on the sore spot.

4. Toothpaste and water – Toothpaste mixed with a little lukewarm water, soak onto cotton and apply to the sore tooth.

5. Salt water – Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in hot water, let it cool to a tolerable temperature and rinse your mouth for about 30 seconds.

6. Ice pack – Take a few ice cubes, put them in a bag, wrap in a thin cloth, and apply to the sore area.

7. Onion – For some this may sound absurd, given the unpleasant smell of onion, but this vegetable can really help in treating tooth pain. Simply cut off a piece and apply it to the affected area. Onion has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help remove bacteria from the mouth and minimize pain.
