If slugs, more precisely plzáci, settle in your garden, you’ll have your work cut out getting rid of them. They prefer damp places where they find a safe shelter and practically have no natural enemy in the garden, so they can merrily feast on your plants.
But we have 7 proven ways to get rid of these greedy creatures
1. Beer traps
Buy the cheapest beer and pour it into plastic cups. Bury them in the ground so they are almost level with the surface. This way slugs will be able to get to their favorite drink more easily. They can smell beer from as far as 10 meters and cannot resist it.
They crawl into the cups and then cannot get back out.
2. Eggshells
Crushed eggshells on your beds will prevent slugs from getting to the plants because they are sharp and the slugs cannot cross them. The shells also add calcium to your plants, so you’ll kill two birds with one stone.
3. Sandpaper
Place pieces of sandpaper around the plants that slugs enjoy feeding on. The rough surface of the paper harms them and they won’t get to the plants anymore.
4. Citrus traps
Don’t throw away citrus peels; instead use them in the fight against slugs. The scent of citrus is very attractive to them, so if you place peels in the garden, slugs from all around will flock to them. Then just collect and dispose of them.
5. Salt
Sprinkle salt on the soil around the plants. It dries out the slugs’ skin, causing them to die. However, be careful not to sprinkle it on the leaves of the plants, because salt also harms the plants.
6. Coffee grounds
Like salt, coffee grounds also harm slugs, but with the added benefit that coffee is an excellent fertilizer for all crops.
7. Chickens and ducks can help
If you keep poultry, occasionally let chickens or ducks into your garden; slugs will be a delicacy for them and you’ll get rid of this unpleasant pest without effort.
However, don’t leave them unattended, because while eating slugs they might also go after your harvest.
We wish you lots of luck getting rid of the slugs!
