If a rash suddenly appears on the skin as a result of an allergic reaction, which usually itches quite a lot, it is hives, medically called urticaria.
This type of skin allergy is not exclusively associated with any particular part of the human body; on the contrary, it can occur practically anywhere, on the torso, limbs and on the head – for example in the area of the face, ears, lips, and even the tongue.
How hives manifest
Hives are typically characterized by skin covered with raised bumps with a usually lighter-colored surrounding area. This dermatological condition got its name because its appearance resembles the irritation of the skin surface caused by nettles.
What causes hives
According to experts in dermatology, the cause of hives is histamine, which naturally occurs in the skin and is suddenly released by allergens.
There are a whole range of allergens that can trigger such a sudden and unpredictable skin reaction, for example
- strawberries
- fish and other seafood
- certain types of nuts, e.g. cashews or peanuts, and so on
Hives can be acute, in which case its symptoms usually subside within about a week, or chronic if the symptoms persist longer.
As for the size of the bumps, which are technically called wheals (singular: wheal), they can be as large as the palm, but are usually on the order of millimeters.
Treatment of hives
The most commonly used drugs to suppress hives are antihistamines, which are sometimes combined with appropriate blockers, but this treatment is not always successful. For a faster course of treatment it is recommended to significantly reduce protein intake, which could even worsen hives’ symptoms. Although it may seem strange, factors such as a moderate air temperature, abstinence and also discontinuation of some medications that may have undesirable side effects in combination with prescribed drugs also have a positive effect on the treatment process.
If hives cause problems such as more pronounced breathing difficulties or swelling in the throat, it is necessary to seek medical help as soon as possible.
