We all know this all too well. Summer is in full swing, and since we have a free weekend and would like to spend it with family or friends, we invite a few people and also prepare an outdoor barbecue or the favorite roasting of sausages.

Frequent uninvited guests at these events are flies, whose presence, accompanied by swoops at the food and buzzing, can completely spoil the relaxed summer atmosphere.

There are various products and traps on the market that help in the fight against flies, but, for example, the well-known and time-tested flypapers prove effective only indoors, and not in the garden. Sophisticated traps for outdoor use are already available, however if you don’t trust them and are perhaps put off by their purchase price, you can try the tips below for making your own functional fly repellents.

Mysterious bag with seemingly ordinary water

To make this simple but surprisingly effective repellent you will need only:

  • a sealable plastic bag
  • water
  • salt
  • lime juice, and
  • a few coins.

First, in a bowl mix approximately 2 and a half cups of water with lime juice and salt (don’t skimp on the amount). The lime juice is included because the acids it contains make the coins stay shiny. Mix everything well and carefully pour into a sealable plastic bag, for example one given to you at airports for transporting liquids. Throw a few coins into the mixture and seal the bag tightly.

Hang the prepared repellent near the place where you have set up seating for your guests, and you will see that flies will avoid it. The effectiveness of this repellent is confirmed by many people who have already made it.

Hanging CD

If you have a CD that is, for example, scratched or contains music you don’t listen to, you can throw it away, or, which is much better, also use it as a fly repellent.

It’s very simple. Hang the CD (and for greater effect there can be several) near the place where you want to grill, and you’ll see it spin and repel flies.

And why are the methods listed above so effective despite their simplicity? They are based on the structure of a fly’s body and on the fact that its eyes cannot cope with a larger amount of dazzling light, which both the bag with water and coins and the hanging CD reflect. The fly is frightened and tends to avoid a potentially dangerous spot, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve.
