Everyone probably knows it. Someone may have experienced it once in their life, for another it may be a common reality. If you were at a lively party with friends, ate all sorts of things and mixed drinks, you then wake up with a completely strange and unpleasant taste in your mouth. But you know the cause, so it does not worry you, because this problem will soon pass.
However, it can happen that the unpleasant taste in the mouth appears more often, and without an obvious cause. In such a case it is more than appropriate to find out whether you are healthy and whether your troubles are not symptoms of some disease. The body sends various signals, and fluctuations in taste are often one of them. If you have, for example, an elevated blood sugar level or even diabetes, it can manifest as a sweet taste in the mouth that keeps returning. In any case, it pays to listen to your own body.
Salty taste
A salty taste fairly clearly indicates a lack of water in the body. If we drink less than we should, especially depending on age, energy expenditure and ambient temperature, blood and other bodily fluids, including saliva, thicken, which gives them an unpleasantly salty taste.
A similar problem is experienced by people who consume alcohol in larger amounts. Especially wine and beer bind moisture and it is known that the feeling of thirst increases sharply during the sobering process.
The cure is quite simple – drink more, preferably still water, regularly throughout the day and cut down on alcohol.
Bitter taste
A bitter taste in the mouth may be connected with insufficient liver function and bile formation disorders; the bile ducts can of course also be affected. The body is at risk of inflammation and related more serious health complications.
Recommended measures include in particular
- avoiding all heavy meals, not only fried foods, but also pickled and those with a high salt content
- increasing fluid intake, especially still water, and
- last but not least, visiting a doctor.
Sometimes there are also cases when the intestines work more slowly than usual and digestive processes therefore take place in the body longer than they should, which can of course also lead to problems.
In such a case it is recommended to have a blend of herbs prepared for tea that will support intestinal activity. A person with this problem should also increase consumption of fresh vegetables and fruit, which contain fiber and other substances necessary for proper peristalsis. If you consume alcohol in larger quantities or too often, you should limit it, because the liver then cannot function as it should. A lighter diet will also help with the troubles, especially by limiting sweet and fatty foods.
Sweet taste
We already mentioned the sweet taste in the mouth in the introduction to this article. You should definitely not underestimate it, because it signals a disturbance of blood sugar levels, which can lead to the development of diabetes.
Do not hesitate to visit a doctor, because in this case it is essential to start treatment by a specialist as soon as possible, especially an endocrinologist and diabetologist. Diabetes is a serious disease that should not be underestimated.
Sour taste
If you repeatedly feel a sour taste in your mouth, the stomach is signaling that it is overacidified.
This problem can be fairly easily eliminated by adjusting and lightening the diet, particularly by excluding sweet and fatty foods. Even in this case, however, if the difficulties persist it is recommended to visit a doctor, because there can be more causes of a sour taste in the mouth.
Metallic taste
The cause of a metallic taste in the mouth does not have to be sought far; it is usually problems of the oral cavity itself, e.g. periodontitis. However, it can also be the result of using certain types of medication or poisoning by heavy metals.
If it is not the aforementioned poisoning, in which case it is of course necessary to see a doctor immediately, the problem can be alleviated by rinsing the mouth with baking soda.
Hydrogen sulfide taste
People cannot tolerate even microscopic traces of hydrogen sulfide in the air, let alone be pleased by a hydrogen sulfide taste in the mouth. If you find that this taste in the mouth returns, usually in the mornings, it may be a sign of insufficient production of the much-needed gastric juices.
The advice on how to eliminate this taste may surprise you. To support juice production, it is necessary to increase consumption of fried and spicy foods that activate gastric juices. But as with all persistent troubles – do not delay a visit to a doctor, who will perform the necessary examinations and may possibly discover another cause and intervene effectively.
