Traditional Czech cuisine cannot do without onions. The same goes for traditional medicine, because onion has antibacterial and antifungal effects. Our grandmothers already knew about these, which is why onion was always first aid during viral infections, coughs, or colds. Onion is also very effective for chronic illnesses that cause long-term problems. Unlike pharmacy medicines, it does not contain added substances and chemicals, does not cause side effects, and above all is cheap. Because of that it is accessible to everyone, since there’s always one in the pantry. What does it help with and how can it be used? Try nine onion tips for health!
#1 For fever
The ideal remedy for children with fevers is onion sliced into rings, which you place in apple cider vinegar and then wrap in a cloth or clean sock and apply to the ears. The fever will quickly subside.
#2 For infections
Onion has strong antibacterial and also antibiotic effects thanks to the compound allicin. It is therefore advisable to consume raw onion. It also works great on wounds affected by infection; simply spread a paste made from bread soaked in milk and finely chopped onion on them. Crush the mixture well and apply it to the wound, cover with gauze and leave for 2 hours, then replace with a fresh compress until the infection disappears.
#3 Stops bleeding
A scrape or a cut? Here too onion sliced into pieces, placed in a cloth that you apply to the wound and leave on, will help. You’ll be surprised how quickly the bleeding stops and the wound closes. It is advisable to repeat the application several times.
#4 For burns
You might hardly believe that onion also works well as first aid for sunburns or blisters. Place onion slices directly on the burned area for 2 minutes, then rub on egg white to soothe it and no scars will remain.
#5 For cough
Onion syrup is very effective for sore throats and persistent coughs. Not everyone loves the taste of onion, and children especially hate it. Therefore it’s more suitable to place an onion segment in the ear; this allows active substances like allicin to enter the bloodstream and help get rid of even an unpleasant cough.
#6 For chills
Onion helps not only with fever but also with chills. Eat one raw onion and after a few hours you’ll feel back to full strength.
#7 For middle ear inflammation and migraine
Inserting a piece of onion into the ear will also help you get rid of a middle ear infection or pain more quickly. For migraine it’s advisable to leave a piece of onion in the ear overnight to relieve the pain completely.
#8 For scars
Similar to burns, onion is also effective for scars and acne. You can get rid of surgical scars as well as acne by rubbing the area with onion juice, then simply rinse with warm water.
#9 For insect bites
Do children have insect or mosquito bites? There’s nothing easier than getting rid of itchy swellings by applying a piece of onion. You can also finely chop the onion and rub the area. The onion will draw out the poison and reduce pain and swelling.
