Although roughly from mid-spring many people start to lose weight to get a swimsuit figure, summer is paradoxically a period when we tend to forget all our resolutions. Especially when it comes to healthy eating – in summer everyone likes to let themselves go a little, at least on vacation. Potato chips are also one of the typical summer snacks we can’t give up. Although they are fried and nutritionally unsuitable for consumption, and some substances contained in them are even carcinogenic.

Summer in New York

Yet chips have been with us for more than 150 years. Their story began in the state of New York in the USA in the summer of 1853, where they were created somewhat by accident as a substitute for classic French fries. They only reached Czechoslovakia many years later; for example, the company Bohemia Chips was founded as late as 1982. Its products were not widely available, so chips were for a long time an under-the-counter commodity here.

Authentic homemade potato chips

Nothing beats honest homemade food. Anyone who bakes sourdough bread at home or simmers real broths for hours will confirm this. And of course this applies to chips as well: even when made at home they won’t be among the healthiest or most nutritionally balanced foods, but at least you’ll be able to control the amount of salt, the quality of the oil, and last but not least you can be sure they contain no E-numbers or preservatives.

The procedure for making homemade potato chips is as follows:

  • Lightly brush baking paper with frying oil. You can add a little salt too, but it’s not necessary.
  • First halve the potatoes and then slice them into slices no more than 1 mm thick. You can use, for example, a grater.
  • Arrange the potato slices on a plate coated with oil. Salt the potatoes and optionally season with pepper, garlic, paprika or other spices to taste.
  • Cover the potatoes with baking paper, put them in the microwave and let it run at full power for 3-4 minutes.
