Today every house or apartment already has a built-in lock that can be locked. Some of us have invested and even bought special doors that are almost impossible to open without the right key. However, the following trick may still come in handy. Maybe you own an old cottage, are renovating a house, remodeling, or live in a hostel, on a dormitory floor, or in a lodging house. It may sound unbelievable, but with the help of cutlery you can protect yourself from uninvited visitors just as effectively as with a lock and key.

Forget about overpriced locks and expensive installation

In today’s article a master locksmith will advise you how to secure a door with the help of a fork so that you won’t even have to call a specialist to install a lock for you. Locks are usually found only on entrance doors and bathroom doors. But what if you want to have one somewhere else and hide your valuables from thieves? You have two options. You can

  • call a locksmith and have a lock installed
  • take a fork and secure the door yourself – for free!

It may seem funny and unlikely, but a fork is just as effective as any lock. It just takes a little patience and skill. Watch a master locksmith to see how it’s done. You’ll be surprised how easy it is.

How to lock a door with a fork

Start by taking a fork that has the longest possible tines and at the same time a flat handle. Attention – this is important. If the handle is too thick or the tines too short, the procedure won’t work for you. And here we go. First insert the fork into the hole in the frame that you want to close.

Mark on the fork how deep you inserted it. Pull it out. Now bend it at the marked spot to 90 degrees. Cut off the handle. Put the bent fork into the hole in the frame. Close the door. Insert the cut-off handle between the prongs of the fork. And that’s it. The door is locked and no one can open it from the outside. To unlock, remove the handle from the prongs.
