You have probably heard of reflexology. Its principles were used by people for centuries, but as a scientific discipline it is relatively young.
Reflexology is based on the principle of the interconnectedness of the whole body and on the idea that certain places on the body are connected to certain internal organs, whose function can thus be influenced from the outside, precisely by applying pressure to these so‑called reflex points. Reflexology is sometimes also called zone therapy.
Reflex points are located
- primarily on the soles of the feet, and
- on the hands, but also, for example,
- on the forearms
- on the collarbone, and
- on the ears.
This discipline may be of interest to you because with a bit of basic knowledge you can successfully influence your health problems, provided of course they are not too serious or chronic. By applying pressure to the appropriate reflex points you can in particular reduce pain, but also, for example, lower stress, ease an allergic reaction, or improve blood flow. However, it is important to know that this method is not recommended if the area with the reflex points you intend to use was injured recently and is in the process of healing.
If you therefore want to avoid medication and literally try to help yourself, here are a few tips on how to do it.
Back and neck pain
For these problems, massage the top of the thumb toward the wrist. Repeat the procedure on both hands several times in succession and if the spot is painful you can extend the gentle massage to increase the effect.
Headaches
To relieve headaches, massage the area between the thumb and index finger and alternatively also the tips of all your fingers. Pressure on these spots has an immediate effect on pain, thanks to their direct connection with the part of the nervous system that is located in the head and temples.
Insomnia
To improve the quality of your sleep, which is essential for the proper and full functioning of body and mind, focus your attention on the middle segment of the thumb. Press on this spot and hold the pressure for at least 30 seconds; you can double this time if you wish. Alternate thumbs and then repeat the entire process several times for greater effect.
Colds and flu
For these symptoms, concentrate on the top segments of your fingers and massage them from the base toward the fingertips. Repeat the procedure until each finger has been massaged in this way several times.
