If you have been growing houseplants for a while, you know that to thrive they need to be supported with fertilizer from time to time. There are plenty available on the market. However, if you want to avoid chemical substances and often confusingly specified compositions, try preparing a simple and effective fertilizer at home. You will be surprised what it can do to perfectly nourish your plants.
The basic ingredient is the common potato
The miraculous elixir lies in potato water. The water in which you boil potatoes in their skins contains plenty of nutrients and vitamins. It is therefore perfectly suitable as a fertilizer for houseplants. Some people water only orchids with potato water. However, its effects have been proven with other houseplants as well. If the condition of another flower troubles you, try this method on it too.
How to prepare the fertilizer?
All you will need are just potatoes and water. For 1 liter of water you will need about 3–6 potatoes. This way the water will gain enough nutrients to help the plants. Peel the prepared potatoes and cut the skins into smaller pieces. Put them in a pot and cook. Then let the pot cool and remove the skins. Use the solution prepared this way to water the desired plants roughly every 2 weeks. You can use the prepared fertilizer for two waterings. It will easily keep in the refrigerator for 15–20 days.
Another source of vitamins for orchids
Other growers have proven additional methods to provide orchids in particular with the necessary vitamins. Orchids can often be troublesome to grow. Many clever growers, after a few years of growing them, have found their own methods and tricks to keep them healthy and beautiful. One of these options is the use of common dietary supplements. Ideal are vitamins B12, B6 and B1. You can get these vitamins at any pharmacy and if you mix them with water, you will create another very nutritious solution that provides orchids with the necessary support for healthy growth and flowering.
