If you are among rose lovers and want to expand their cultivation, we have a great tip for you on how to make your own seedlings. The purchased ones are often unreliable. Sometimes when choosing you can pick the wrong one and you will plant a cutting that will never grow into a rose. If you want to avoid these experiences, try this simple guide.
Grow your own high-quality seedling
To make a new seedling you will need one flowering rose, or rather its stem. After cutting off the flower, shorten the stem. Trim it roughly after the third leaf. Remove the leaves from the prepared stem and it will be ready to plant into the substrate. To further encourage rooting, try soaking the stems in a special solution before planting. To prepare it you will need:
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 2 teaspoons of aloe vera juice
- 1 teaspoon of wood ash
- 120 ml of distilled water
Mix the honey, aloe and ash and then add 120 ml of distilled water at room temperature. Submerge the stem in the resulting solution for several hours or even half a day. Follow the rule that the older the stem, the more time it needs to absorb nutrients. You can plant several such stems at once. Prepare all of them this way before planting. If you don’t have your own roses, try the same procedure with store-bought cut roses. Instead of throwing them away, use the stems and grow your own roses.
Proper care for the seedlings
However, it is important that they are covered, for example with a jar, and that the soil is always sufficiently moist. Pay attention also when choosing the substrate. Definitely do not choose heavy soil; roses do not thrive in that. On the contrary, they need a well-draining soil mixed with compost, or with well-rotted or granulated manure. An easy method is to buy a special substrate for roses, which is already adapted for their ideal cultivation. Check the planted stems and soon they will reward you with sprouting leaves, which after some time will be followed by flowers.
