Unfortunately we lose more hair than usual when washing. The water that flushes it down the drain can carry it deep into the pipes. And when hair accumulates in the pipes, the drain becomes clogged. That’s why it’s important to remove hair regularly. With the following methods it’s not difficult.

Find out how deep the hair is

If the water is draining poorly, it’s time to check what’s blocking it. If it’s just hair, you can remove it with your fingers. But if the hair is located very deep so that you can’t reach it, you can use various tools. A wire coat hanger or a piece of wire bent into a hook works well. With that you can easily pull the hair out of the drain.

Plunger for a clogged drain

If the hair is too deep for a hook to help, you can use a plunger for a clogged drain. You can get one at any drugstore. For it to seal well, the surrounding area needs to be dry and you must place the plunger head so that no gap (even a small one) forms between the surface and the plunger. Now move the plunger handle up and down. The blockage should shift up – and you may then be able to remove it with the coat hanger.

Using mild chemicals

You don’t have to be afraid; the chemicals we now recommend are not outright caustic, but they will deal with hair in the drain very well. It’s even a cheaper method than buying commercial drain-clearing products. You will need just three ingredients:

  • ¾ cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate),
  • ½ cup of vinegar,
  • 1 l hot water.

Proceed by pouring the baking soda directly into the drain. It should fall through and stop at the blockage. Then add the vinegar, plug with a stopper and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then pour boiling water. After that you can try any of the previous methods.
