Sciatica, or inflammation of the sciatic nerve, colloquially called “houser”, is characterized by unpleasant pains in the lumbar spine. It is one of the most common back problems a person can suffer from. One overly abrupt movement or getting chilled is enough for severe pain in the lower back and loins to appear. The pain can shoot down into the limbs, making not only sitting but also walking difficult. Today we will look together at the causes, symptoms and home treatment of inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

Causes of sciatica

The most common cause of inflammation of the sciatic nerve is a condition called a herniated disc, in other words a displaced disc, which has moved from its usual position and presses on the sciatic nerve. It should not be taken lightly – firstly because it is very painful and secondly, if you do not address it, you risk paralysis of one of the lower limbs. Other causes of sciatica include:

  • Getting chilled
  • Inflammation of nerves
  • Sudden, abrupt movement
  • Physical strain

Symptoms of sciatica

When the sciatic nerve is compressed, pain, numbness or tingling sensations occur from the lower back down into one of the lower limbs. You can even feel symptoms in the tips of your toes. The intensity of the pain depends on the severity of the health problem and can range from mild to truly unbearable. Some people with sciatica also complain of weak muscles in the affected lower limb or buttocks.

Home treatment for sciatica

In acute cases it is of course always important to visit your doctor. In mild cases, however, you can help yourself with a home remedy made of milk, garlic and honey. First you need to peel and crush 4 cloves of garlic and add them to 200 ml of milk brought to a boil over low heat. As soon as the milk begins to boil, remove it from the heat and let it cool. For better taste add honey. The preparation is intended to be consumed once a day. After just a few days of regular use you should notice positive effects. The strong anti-inflammatory properties of garlic will soothe the pain and prevent swelling of the sciatic nerve. In addition, try to exercise and stretch your body to speed up the recovery process.
