Slowly but surely autumn is coming with its gloomy weather, rain… and colds. With a runny nose comes mucus and a wet cough hand in hand. It’s not a serious problem, but it’s not pleasant either, and sometimes it takes a long time before we get rid of all the settled phlegm. If mucus is bothering you, you can try some of our simple guides to natural drinks that will quickly get you back on your feet and help with expectoration.

No need to run to the pharmacy, give herbs a chance

In acute problems the quickest solution is certainly to go to the pharmacy and buy a cough syrup. Many herbs can do the same service for us, for example:

  • licorice,
  • thyme,
  • fennel,
  • sage,
  • plantain.

The key is to thin the mucus so it is easier to cough up; without maintaining a proper fluid intake it won’t work. Here, too, it’s worthwhile to drink herbal infusions and decoctions.

Tea blends to ease expectoration for children and adults

The basic and at the same time the simplest recipe is linden tea. It also promotes sweating, which the body uses to fight viruses. You can pour half a liter of water over one tablespoon of dried herb and let it steep for 15 minutes; after it cools slightly sweeten with honey and add lemon. You can sip it continuously or take it by the teaspoon to calm yourself whenever a coughing fit approaches. You can also try an interesting recipe with onion. Chop it into small pieces and put it into a pot, then pour a liter of cold water over it. Bring it to a boil and simmer for ten minutes. Then remove the pot from the stove and add one tablespoon of dried thyme. Let it stand for at least 15 minutes. You can sweeten it with honey, drink it immediately or dose it by the teaspoon. A herbal mix to ease expectoration can also be prepared from dried mullein, lungwort, coltsfoot and plantain. All the herbs should be in equal proportion. Pour 250 ml of boiling water over two teaspoons of these herbs and let steep for approximately ten to fifteen minutes. All the teas mentioned should be used until the problem completely disappears.
