You don’t have to suffer from arachnophobia directly, but you certainly don’t want spiders at home. They may not damage the household like insect invaders or even mice, but still no one wants spiders in their home. But how do you get rid of them when autumn and winter are the times they increasingly look for shelter in apartments and houses? The solution, of course, is various kinds of repellents that prevent their spread around the home, but commercial products often contain a range of added substances and toxins, while there are several options to get rid of these pesky, sometimes even dangerous, creatures. Which are they?
1. Citrus
Spiders hate strong, aromatic smells and scents, so it’s appropriate to use citrus in the home. Place peels from citrus fruits in various places; lemon or orange peel works great. Various furniture polishes with a citrus aroma also work well.
2. Tobacco
Spiders also literally hate the smell of tobacco, so buy tobacco and soak it in water. Put the brewed mixture into a spray bottle and spray the mixture into corners and nooks in the home.
3. Cedar
Similarly, cedar aroma is exactly what will get spiders out of your home. You can place cedar blocks and rings in drawers and wardrobes; the scent of cedar repels not only spiders but also insects.
4. Peppermint oil
If there’s one thing spiders hate, it’s mint. Mix peppermint oil with water and spray the mixture throughout the house, mainly into darker nooks, corners, and behind cabinets. You’ll get rid of not only spiders, but your house will smell wonderful.
5. Chestnuts
Chestnuts can also effectively remove spiders from your home, so spread chestnuts on windowsills and you won’t encounter spiders at home.
6. Vinegar
Vinegar is a great helper in the household and it will help with spiders too. Just spray the places where they appear and you won’t notice them anymore.
7. Cats
Cats don’t only eliminate mice, they also help with spiders.
8. Keep the house clean
Spiders also don’t thrive in a perfectly tidy house, so clean regularly and remove cobwebs in corners and behind wardrobes. In a clean house they won’t have enough food.
9. Prevent their access
How to have a house without spiders? Fewer plants around the house, a tidy yard, mowed grass — all of this will deter spiders that won’t have anywhere to hide. Also check doors and windows, seal cracks and openings with caulk.
10. Make your own natural repellent
Still can’t get rid of them? Make your own natural repellent. For the preparation you will need:
- 1 cup white vinegar,
- 40 drops of peppermint oil,
- 2 cups of water.
Mix all the ingredients and pour the prepared mixture into a spray bottle. Spray on all the places where spiders commonly occur. Don’t skip various nooks, entryways, or dark spaces.
