If you suffer from foot odor, you’ve surely already tried a number of ways to remove it. Foot odor is very unpleasant, especially if you have to take your shoes off in someone else’s surroundings. Practically everyone has encountered it; it usually appears with prolonged wearing of lower-quality shoes that collect dust, during more demanding hikes, or in the summer months when the foot sweats much more even in open shoes. It is caused by bacteria that settle on the foot and mix with sweat, and it can also be the result of health problems such as nail fungus, etc. Getting rid of foot odor, if it is chronic and persists continuously, may not be as complicated as it first appears. Let’s look at 6 simple tricks on how to do it.

What causes foot odor

Before actually applying any of the cleansing treatments that should help eliminate foot odor, it is necessary to think carefully about what type of footwear (and also clothing) we use. Footwear should be clean (especially inside) and sturdy and should not pinch the foot anywhere. If you wear smaller or larger sizes, the foot tends to sweat more from the strain in them. An important aspect is also the type and material of the socks we use. Socks should allow the foot to breathe freely, so they should be of good quality and made from natural fabrics – socks made from synthetic fibers generally don’t help feet much. One of the factors that causes odor is also stress, since practically the whole body sweats during it.

How to remove foot odor

The first step in fighting foot odor is buying quality footwear and clothing, and also changing your lifestyle to eliminate excessive stress. This way you will ensure that the foot will sweat less and will not give bacteria a chance to multiply. Afterwards you can apply one of the following remedies that will help you keep your feet in good condition:

  1. Pull off birch catkins and place them between the toes. Put on your socks and leave the catkins to work for at least two hours before you put your shoes on.
  2. Before going to bed, sprinkle your feet with powder made from oak bark, put on cotton socks and leave them on until morning. Wash your feet thoroughly before putting on shoes. This process is applied regularly every day for two weeks.
  3. For sleeping, wear cotton socks which you sprinkle with boric acid. Before putting your shoes on in the morning you need to wash your feet thoroughly. The remedy is applied as a two-week treatment.
  4. Wash your feet every morning in cold water for three months.
  5. Sprinkle baking soda into the shoe and let it sit. Then thoroughly wipe the inside of the shoe. Soda neutralizes the stuck-in odor and cleans the shoe.
