This is a problem that potentially affects all women regardless of age group.
So what is it? A vaginal swelling caused by a disruption of the balance of bacteria in the vaginal environment (for example Gardnerella vaginalis). This leads to an infection known as bacterial vaginosis. Although this change can affect any woman regardless of her age, it usually occurs after sex without protection.
Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis
Although unprotected sex can increase the risk of bacterial vaginosis, it should be borne in mind that it is not a sexually transmitted disease. One of the symptoms that point to this problem is severe pain or at least discomfort during urination.
Likewise, various abnormal changes in vaginal discharge. Mainly if it is thick or thin, it may indicate an infection. Especially if it has a strong fishy smell. It also manifests in color – a greenish, white, or gray discharge is a fairly clear symptom of bacterial vaginosis.
Causes of the disease
This mainly includes a change in the vaginal bacterial flora that causes bacterial vaginosis. It is mainly caused by lactobacilli. Also due to an excessive increase in anaerobes, because they also change the balance of microorganisms. On the other hand, a lack of natural lactobacilli, products that worsen the vaginal balance (some intimate hygiene products) and pronounced promiscuity are additional causes leading to this infection.
Treatment and how to avoid it
After a pelvic examination, during which a small sample of vaginal discharge is taken, your doctor will be able to determine whether you have this infection. After the diagnosis is made, antibiotics usually follow – often clindamycin and metronidazole. Then creams or gels applied directly to the vagina. It is also recommended to abstain from sexual activity until full recovery.
Once the problem is cured, it can recur. Avoid overly artificial cleansing products and those with perfume. When you have sex, use condoms.
