It’s not easy to come to terms with not being able to have children. Infertility treatment is very time- and emotionally-demanding and does not always end happily. The protagonists of our story experienced the unimaginable, but in the end even they were smiled upon by luck. Read the extraordinary story of Carolyn and Sean.
Carolyn could not get pregnant naturally
Carolyn and Sean married in 1993 and a year later their first child was born. Both wanted a large family. But Carolyn was unable to conceive naturally. To become pregnant she had to undergo artificial insemination. This is how her second and third children were born. Even though doctors warned her that another artificial insemination might not succeed, Carolyn did not let herself be discouraged.
They waited a long ten years for their fourth child. Joy gave way to pain
Carolyn only managed to become pregnant in 2009.
- After ten years of fruitless attempts and treatment
- During that time she had several miscarriages
She and Sean were very happy. They rejoiced that they were finally welcoming a new member into their family. But soon after Carolyn’s pregnancy was confirmed, the doctor called them and announced that the child Carolyn was carrying was not theirs! The utterly shocked couple learned that there had been an embryo mix-up. Their embryo, which had been implanted in another woman, unfortunately did not take. The couple therefore faced a very difficult decision.
The couple decided to give the baby to its biological parents
Carolyn and Sean knew that the fourth pregnancy was the last. Even so, they decided to give the child to its biological parents. Those were Shannon and Paul Morrell from Detroit. Carolyn delivered a healthy boy by cesarean section four weeks early. The boy’s name is Logan and Carolyn spent only half an hour with him after the birth, then handed him over to his biological parents. It was extremely hard for her, but she did not give up her desire for another child.
A surrogate carried twins for them and then something no one expected happened
In 2011 the couple had twins carried for them by a surrogate mother. This helped Carolyn heal the wound of losing Logan. The couple was happy and enjoyed their five children. Carolyn was already 45 when one morning she took a pregnancy test just to be sure. It was positive! The impossible became reality. Carolyn became pregnant naturally and in 2014 she gave birth to a baby boy named Nicholas. After all the hardships her dream came true and they are finally a complete big family.
