Crying is a certain expression of how a person feels. But showing your feelings outwardly is unfortunately taken as a sign of weakness in today’s society. And this applies doubly to crying. Despite how crying is perceived, it can actually help our body. What exactly happens to our body when we cry was unraveled by Dr. William H. Frey, a neurologist and founder of the Research Institute for Alzheimer’s Disease. He devoted more than 20 years to the study of crying and tears.

Crying heals

According to Dr. Frey, crying is actually a healthy and cleansing process for our body. And it is one of the most natural ways to get rid of stress. If stress is not treated, it has many negative effects on the human body, such as an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

It relieves stress

Chronic (constant) stress leads to many health problems. It increases the risk of heart attack, contributes to digestive problems (for example the formation of ulcers), to headaches and chronic migraines. Crying reduces or eliminates stress.

It lowers blood pressure

Dr. Frey’s studies show that crying immediately lowers blood pressure and heart rate. This is especially important for removing stress. Moreover, high blood pressure leads to damage to blood vessels and the heart and can contribute to heart failure, stroke and dementia.

It removes toxins from the body

Along with tears, chemicals such as toxins and cortisol also leave the human body. Their accumulation in the body can mean major health problems.

It reduces manganese levels

Manganese affects mood. In higher amounts it causes anxiety, irritability and aggression.
