Whether you heat your house or apartment with a boiler, with electricity or with district heating, it is necessary to perform the required maintenance every year to keep you warm throughout the winter. Often certain repairs and checks are also needed during the heating season.
Boiler
Boilers are found mainly in single-family houses, but we can also find them in apartment buildings. Before the start of the season, i.e. at the latest in autumn, it is necessary to carry out annual maintenance. This consists primarily of cleaning the boiler and the chimney. You should call a professional for that. Every 3 years it is then necessary to carry out an inspection check performed by a trained technician. This applies to solid fuel boilers; for gas boilers an inspection is required every year.
If you are choosing a new boiler, consider whether you want a boiler that is suitable only for heating or a combi boiler that can also be used for heating water. If you have underfloor heating, a condensing boiler will be the best choice.
Thermostat
Newer thermostats can set the boiler to heat the apartment only for a specified period and to a set temperature. So if the room temperature reaches the set temperature, the thermostat will switch the boiler off. Correct programming of the thermostat can therefore save a lot of costs.

Radiators
The most common reason why radiators do not heat as they should is that they are airlocked. Regular bleeding removes the air that blocks the flow of hot water, making heating more efficient.
It is often worth considering whether to replace old radiators with newer ones. Panel radiators are capable of working with a much greater heat output. When choosing them, you should not overlook factors such as:
- thermal insulation
- quality of doors
- quality of windows
- room location
If you suffer from perpetually “frozen” feet, you definitely won’t go wrong buying underfloor heating. You will appreciate it especially on freezing days.
