Although it is sad, there are still many cases in which children treat their parents badly or even abandon them. Spain is aware of the frightening situation, and therefore comes forward with a new bill. It would mean that a child must take careful care of their parents, otherwise they would lose their claim to inheritance.
New law
Currently Spain excludes from inheritance those children who commit serious acts against their parents. These mostly concern killing or causing bodily harm. The new law is being debated and may even be approved.
The main goal is to protect parents, because when they grow old and their children show no willingness to help them, supporters of the new law see no reason why such a person should have a claim to inheritance. If the new law passed the vote and thus came into effect, all children would have to be on their guard.
Children as adults
Although the discussion is about children, it also concerns older seniors who care for their even older parents. It is not acceptable for them to be physically or psychologically abused. They should not torture their parents, commit violence against them, or abandon them.
The law also accounts for psychological abuse. This can manifest as devaluing another person, humiliating them, blackmailing them, or similar behavior.
Equal measures for everyone
The law wants to assume that we are all equal. For the right to inheritance to be valid, the family should truly function as a whole. The older should care for the younger, and later vice versa. As a person ages, they become helpless and need their children to provide for them. They should not be denied sleep, food, entertainment, and should be cared for with dignity and respect.
The idea is still under discussion and the people of Spain have different attitudes toward it. Some support it with all their might, while others fundamentally reject it. We will know the result soon, but for now we can only guess how it will all turn out.
