Diabetes – at first sight an illness that is not visible, does not hurt, but can kill us. This disease is non-transmissible, not contagious, and yet millions of people around the world suffer from it. Especially in recent years it has been on the rise. Diabetes is of two types. Diabetes I and II degree. With the first type often young people or even children become ill. The second degree mostly affects people over 50 years of age, and among 70-year-olds more than 15% of the population suffer from it. It is precisely here that the pancreas may produce a sufficient amount of insulin, but the body with its help cannot process sugar. And so the pancreas works more and more until it collapses. How to prevent this and preserve its functions, we will discuss.
Symptoms that you may suffer from diabetes
Every disease has its symptoms, and diabetes is no exception. Symptoms include dry mouth, thirst, frequent urination, itchy skin, feeling hungrier than usual, slowly healing wounds, acne, impotence, loss of appetite, weight gain, frequent infections, irritability, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, and more. Some people do not notice these problems for a long time, but one day they are forced to start dealing with them, and it may turn out that they suffer from diabetes. Problems with not processing ingested carbohydrates can result in chronic inflammation in the body, anywhere. There is no way to predict that a person will develop diabetes. Hereditary predispositions also play a role, but so does our lifestyle. How we eat, how we move, how much we are exposed to stress, and environmental influences.
Protection against the consequences is simple
In Finland they developed a screening method where you fill out a questionnaire, and based on the results they can say with a certain % whether we have predispositions to the disease. These are important steps, because prevention is always cheaper and less painful than treating the disease itself. We can help ourselves by following a few principles to avoid the disease. First of all, it is important to adjust the diet. Leave out excess sugar, which today is even in meat products. If you do use sugar, choose one with a low glycemic index; also try to replace industrially processed foods with ingredients in their natural state, do not use flavor enhancers based on chemical additives, various colorings, and ready-made foods. If you add more movement to that, and a brisk walk 2x – 3x a week for 30 minutes is enough, you are halfway there. Then just don’t stress over every little thing, and try to take things with perspective. Even if it doesn’t seem so, the psyche is often the origin of illnesses.
