Who wouldn’t occasionally treat themselves to a fresh doughnut at a confectionery or bakery? However, if you’ve ever tasted homemade doughnuts, you know they are much better. Today we have a simple recipe for you that you can try at home and pleasantly surprise especially children, but not only them.

Ingredients for preparing the dough

For preparing dough for homemade doughnuts you will need the following ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour – 750 g
  • Whole milk – 300 ml
  • Oil or melted butter – 50 ml + oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar – 5 tablespoons
  • Fresh yeast – ½ cube
  • Whole eggs – 2 pcs
  • Grated lemon zest – to taste
  • Vanilla sugar – 1 packet
  • Salt – a pinch
  • Rum – 1-2 tablespoons

Preparation

First, crumble half a cube of fresh yeast with your fingers, mix it with lukewarm milk, a pinch of salt, a few tablespoons of all-purpose flour and powdered sugar. The mixture should be smooth, without lumps. Put the yeast mixture in a very warm place for at least 10 minutes so that the yeast can start to foam.

Then add the oil, break in two eggs, add the vanilla sugar and a little grated lemon zest and also add rum, which not only adds flavor but also helps the dough absorb less oil during frying. Finally, gradually fold the sifted all-purpose flour into the dough. Place the finished dough in a bowl, brush it with oil or melted butter and set it somewhere warm to rise. The dough’s volume should roughly double. After some time knead the dough and cover it again.

Finally roll out the finished dough into a sheet about a finger thick and use a glass to cut out circles. Leave them covered on a cloth dusted with flour to rest and rise for approximately 20 minutes.

Fill a suitable pot with oil and when it is hot, fry the doughnuts in it on both sides until they brown. Frying each side takes a few minutes. You can flip them several times while frying. If you fry several at once, keep in mind that they will expand, so don’t put too many into the pot. Not only does that cause an undesirable drop in the oil temperature, but the doughnuts won’t have enough space and therefore may be unevenly cooked. Sprinkle the cooled doughnuts with sifted powdered sugar before serving.
