For a person, movement provided by the lower limbs, which form the body’s basic supporting part, is natural. Unfortunately we rarely realize how much we harm our feet with bad habits and thus damage our own health.

What is harmful to the feet

The first thing that probably comes to mind is footwear. If we wear shoes that are unsuitable or do not fit us for a long time, the body’s center of gravity changes in an undesirable way and some parts of the feet are therefore disproportionately loaded. Narrow and high heels in particular present a problem, although their negative effect can be somewhat mitigated by an elevated platform.

If it comes to the other extreme, i.e., walking barefoot, it is important to know when it is beneficial and when it is not. It always depends on the specific circumstances, especially on the terrain, the weather and the condition of the feet. For example, walking barefoot on hot asphalt certainly will not be healthy. As for beneficial barefoot walking, it is best in natural terrain and, for example, on pebbles, which exert pressure on acupressure points, of which there are many on the soles. The Kneipp path is also excellent and is often part of spas and wellness centers, because it combines the effect of pebbles and small stones with the beneficial alternation of very warm and very cold water, which is extremely good for the lower limbs.

What are the most common foot problems?

The most common foot health problems include:

  • growths
  • spurs
  • bunions
  • flat feet
  • hammer toes.

For example, a bunion is one of the very common complaints. It manifests itself in that one bone tilts inward, causing the joints of the big toe to shift outward. It does not look aesthetic, but for most affected people that is the least of their problems. A bunion is often painful. It is usually associated with flat feet and also poorly chosen footwear. Fortunately there are a number of aids to relieve the difficulties, such as special insoles or taping; there are also effective exercises. Some cases, however, end in surgery, which does not mean that the problem cannot recur.

For any problem with walking, balance, or even distribution of load on the lower limbs, it is advisable to consult, depending on the severity, either a doctor or at least seek advice in medical supply stores or pharmacies, where specialists will recommend a suitable aid, for example insoles for shoes made specifically for your problem. Today you can also get custom-made insoles that significantly help and provide relief.

Care and attention should be given especially to children’s feet, which are still developing and in which many problems can be successfully prevented in time.
