Covers and upholstery on furniture get dirty over time and with regular use, just like our clothes, sheets and many other things. However, cleaning upholstery on a couch or armchair is somewhat more complicated than, for example, washing our clothing. If you don’t want to pay large amounts for professional cleaning, it’s possible to clean upholstery at home, simply and for a few bucks.
Stains and dirt
A couch can be dirtied practically anytime and by anything – a careless movement or a mischievous, rambunctious child and a stain from ketchup, wine or other foods or substances is born. Today I will introduce two simple and quick methods to clean these stains with a single ingredient that you most likely already have at home! And what ingredient is that? Ordinary baking soda!
Method number 1
For this method simply dissolve 5 large tablespoons of baking soda in half a liter of warm to hot water. Pour into a spray bottle, and finally spray the affected area with this solution generously.
Method number 2
For this method you won’t mix anything. Pour hot water over the stain and then sprinkle it with a continuous layer of baking soda so that it covers the entire stain or dirt.
With both of these methods it is important what you do after you have moistened the upholstery. Most people recommend treating the stain and dirt on the upholstery as follows:
- Scrub thoroughly with a brush with soft bristles.
- Let it dry; 2–3 hours should be enough.
- And finally vacuum carefully.
The stains should disappear after this treatment and cleaning. However, if they do not, repeat the procedure until your couch or armchair is once again without a single blemish. This cleaning method is time- and cost-effective for everyone, it’s simple and straightforward, and thanks to it you can remove all the stains that may appear on your furniture, whether they are stains from ketchup, wine, ink or other substances.
