We will also see higher-quality food. A directive has been approved that prohibits distributing the same foods from the same brands in two-tier quality across the European Union. And so we will finally get food of the same quality as, for example, Germany. This European Union directive will ensure equally high-quality food for all its members. If this does not happen, a product could be removed from sale in the country where it is sold in lower quality. Retail chains also face heavy fines.
Many customers complained about differing food quality
Many end customers have been complaining for years about the differing quality of foods sold in different countries. Most of these foods were sold under the same brand; they were identical products and many even had the same packaging. Many people therefore traveled to neighboring states to shop because they knew the quality of the same foods was better there. Such shopping also paid off for them from a price point of view: foods in neighboring countries tend to be of higher quality and are definitely not more expensive. Either prices are roughly in the same price category, or the products are even cheaper. These quality differences should come to an end across the European Union. The European Union has approved a directive that requires equally high-quality goods in all member states and threatens heavy fines for non-compliance. All retail chains now have time to react and prepare for when the approved directive comes into effect.
According to tests of the same products in different states of the European Union, we know that quality substitution really occurred. Often the differences were noticeable especially in the meat content, or in fat and other ingredients that customers place great emphasis on. Thanks to the new directive, which will be binding for all states of the European Union, we too could finally see those higher-quality foods that, for example, Germany currently enjoys.
