If you love orchids and want your windowsill to be beautiful for a long time, you need to learn the proper care techniques. This graceful, delicate plant has special needs, and by meeting them you will ensure the best conditions for further growth.

Not flowering? Maybe it’s too young

If we bought an orchid that is reluctant to bloom, it may be that it is still too young. To determine its approximate age, you must count the leaves. Mature plants ready to flower have at least 5 to 8 leaves. If you want your flower to thrive, place it in a permanent spot immediately after purchase and do not move it again. Frequent changes of location harm all plants, but orchids are especially sensitive to moving the pot; experienced stress can prevent them from further growth.

The right amount of light is the be-all and end-all

An orchid should always be planted in a transparent pot, even if it looks best in a ceramic container, because it needs light for photosynthesis. Orchids absolutely love the sun and you must ensure enough sunlight. If the plant does not receive sunlight for at least 10 to 12 hours a day, it will not bloom properly. If you cannot provide your orchid with enough sun, it must be illuminated with a special lamp.

Do not underestimate the optimal temperature and ideal watering

You must ensure that the orchid during the day and at night stays at approximately the same temperature. Night temperature should be 5–6 degrees lower than daytime. Thermal comfort must also be ensured during the winter. From late spring to early autumn, orchids can be placed outside. Proper watering is also an important chapter. It is recommended to water only when the soil is completely dry. It is best to water with rainwater, because the chlorine in tap water is not good for the roots. If you must water with tap water, let it stand for a while before watering.
