You’re not exactly an experienced baker, but would still like to surprise your guests with a delicious dessert? In the following article we present two simple recipes for great baked goods that you can make even without baking experience.

Banana cake with glaze

For the batter you will need these ingredients:

  • 300g granulated sugar
  • 300g all-purpose flour
  • 300ml milk
  • a pinch of salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 50g cocoa
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 50ml vegetable oil
  • 60g butter
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 4 bananas

Sift the flour through a sieve and mix all the dry ingredients. Add all the remaining ingredients. First stir the batter with a wooden spoon and then beat it smooth with a hand mixer. Line a cake pan with baking paper and pour the batter into it. Evenly press the bananas into the batter, broken in half or into smaller pieces. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 60 – 75 minutes. You can check if the cake is done by inserting a wooden skewer into it – if no raw batter sticks to it, it’s ready. After baking pour the glaze over the cake. For the glaze you will need:

  • 70ml milk
  • 20g cocoa
  • 70g granulated sugar
  • 40g butter

Cook the milk with the sugar and cocoa over low heat until all the ingredients are well combined. Then turn off the stove and mix in the butter. Pour the prepared glaze over the baked cake. As a bonus you can sprinkle coconut or chopped nuts on top.

Poppy seed bars with vanilla cream and chocolate topping

For the batter you will need:

  • 6 egg whites
  • 3 tablespoons grated coconut
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 5 tablespoons ground poppy seeds
  • 10 tablespoons flour
  • 1 sachet baking powder
  • 5 tablespoons warm milk
  • a few drops of vanilla extract

Beat the egg whites with the sugar. Carefully fold all the other ingredients into the meringue. Mix the batter thoroughly but gently and slowly so that the meringue doesn’t collapse. Spread the mixture evenly on a baking sheet (24x30cm) lined with baking paper. Bake at 200°C for 10 – 15 minutes. After baking let the batter cool and divide it into 3 equal parts. Spread the cream between them, for which you will need:

  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 sachet vanilla pudding
  • 500ml milk
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 250g butter

Cook the pudding according to the instructions on the sachet. Finally stir in the butter cut into cubes and the egg yolks whipped with sugar. Whip until smooth. Once cooled, pour the chocolate topping over the bars, which you obtain by melting 100g dark chocolate with a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a bain-marie. Let the bars cool for 2 hours and then cut them.
