Many of us are intimidated by growing orchids, especially because of their demanding needs for water and fertilizer. Every florist will confirm that the only effective way to properly cultivate these beautiful flowers lies in watering them correctly. It’s not as complicated as it seems. You only need to follow a few rules, thanks to which the most beautiful orchids in the area will proudly stand outside your windows.

Don’t disdain rainwater

Although rainwater is absolutely unsuitable for us to drink or wash with, it acts like a magical potion for orchids. The best way to obtain it is by collecting the water that runs off roofs via gutters directed into tanks or barrels. This also gives you a great fertilizer, because this water contains particles of pollen and bird droppings. Take a larger container, pour this water into it and put the plant in to „bathe“ with its cover. Give it a bath lasting 20 – 30 minutes and then gently dry the leaves. During that time the orchid will absorb the liquid it needs and you won’t have to worry about overwatering. If for time reasons you prefer traditional watering from a watering can, it’s good to follow three rules:

  • In summer we water twice a week, in winter once
  • We always water in the morning
  • After watering we pour out the water from the saucer under the pot

Did you forget to water the plant? We have a recipe for an amazing pick-me-up

Sometimes people go on vacation and forget to arrange for someone to water the plants during their absence. Upon return you may find all your flora (unless you are a fan of cacti) with withered leaves and no chance of survival (of course this depends on the length of your absence). There is an ingredient that works for orchids which you probably wouldn’t think to add to the watering solution. Sugar!  Add a tablespoon of sugar to 1 liter of oil and let the plant bathe for 8–9 hours. You’ll see how after just a few hours it revives and brightens its colors.
