Prepare an easy, unusual and versatile dish that will also be fun to make. It will make a great dinner or an afternoon snack. You don’t even need any special equipment. You only need a few of the following items:
- Sliced toast bread
- Rolling pin
- A can or jar to use as a cutter
- Filling of your choice
How to do it?
Lay the slices of toast bread flat on a work surface or a larger cutting board, or on a clean kitchen counter. From each slice cut out circular shapes using a clean can, jar, or a larger cutter. Remove the excess crust and edges. Roll over the cut-out circles several times with a pastry roller to increase their size. They should not become a complete flat sheet. Their surface should be even.
Take a muffin tin. Prefer a sturdy tin, or silicone cups, rather than paper liners, which may not hold their shape. If you only have paper liners available, stack two or three inside each other to be sure—they will then be firmer and will hold the filling in the desired shape. Grease the tin with a little oil so the bread doesn’t stick.
Fillings to suit your taste
Place one bread circle into each muffin cup and shape it so it forms a little bowl. Then fill it as you like. For example, you can spread tomato paste on it and fill it with sliced cheese, sliced sausage or salami, tomatoes, peppers or corn, or even mushrooms.
Then beat one egg and pour it evenly over the cups. You can also sprinkle herbs on top. Finally, put the cups into the oven and bake until the egg is set and slightly yellow. You can prepare the cups in several variations; you can also experiment with a sweet version where you don’t add an egg but sprinkle, for example, cinnamon on top. The preparation is so simple that children can help with the cooking and baking.
