Has an unannounced guest surprised you and, of all things, your fridge is yawning empty? You ate the last bag of chips yesterday during your favorite movie and now you’re wondering how to entertain friends or family? There’s nothing left to do but grab a wooden spoon and conjure up something interesting in the kitchen. These fluffy little buns certainly won’t offend your unexpected guests; quite the opposite. Maybe their unannounced visits will start happening more and more often.

Ingredients „what the house gave“

It may happen that you’re about to go shopping and at home you really only have basic groceries that will require a bit of cooking skill to turn into a treat that everyone who tastes it will ask you for the recipe. The key is a combination of ingredients that harmonize in flavor. Of course it works without them, but to add variety you can, for example, add pieces of English bacon and white cabbage to the dough, or various herbs and mushrooms. Let your imagination work and you’ll see it will be a success.

Ingredients:

  • 700 g semi-coarse flour
  • 70 g butter
  • 150 g grated cheese (preferably Gouda, but it can also be Cheddar or Niva)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives
  • half a teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 100 ml milk
  • 1 tablespoon full-fat mustard
  • salt
  • a small onion

Mix the flour with softened butter and knead thoroughly. Then add the cheese, finely chopped onion (for more flavor it can also be fried), mustard, salt and milk (and any other ingredients you want to flavor the buns with). Mix again thoroughly. Shape the dough into small rolls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. At the end brush the buns with milk and sprinkle with caraway seeds. Bake in an oven preheated to 180 °C 18 – 20 minutes.
