If you wear glasses, you are probably, in the current pandemic, dealing with one very unpleasant problem. After putting on a mask or respirator over your airways, your glasses start to fog up and your vision deteriorates as a result. This is, of course, caused by exhaled moisture that escapes upward around the mask directly onto the glasses. But if you want to wear the mask correctly and effectively while preventing your glasses from fogging, there is a solution.
Surgeons’ trick before surgery
A scientific study reveals the secret of surgeons, some of whom also have to wear glasses together with surgical masks during operations when they cannot afford any fogging. They have their own method of „dehumidifying“ glasses that you can try yourself.
First, wet the glasses with water. Then carefully and gently lather them with soap over the entire surface of the lenses. Rinse the glasses with warm water. Make sure no soap remains anywhere. Gently dry the glasses and wipe them dry with a clean cloth intended for cleaning spectacle lenses. Be careful not to scratch the glasses. Then you can wear them as you are used to; they will no longer fog up.
Choose the right mask
Fogging can also be eliminated by choosing the right mask or respirator. Any respiratory protection should fit well and seal as tightly to the nose as possible. The best are masks and respirators with a sewn-in wire that you can mold around your nose. Exhaled air then escapes much less under the upper edge of the mask and, therefore, your glasses will not fog up as much.
There are also sprays that should prevent fogging. You can also have lenses fitted with a hydrophobic coating, which repels water. Glasses will defog faster and will not attract as much dust and dirt. However, you can also create such a protective layer at home using a little shaving foam. Simply apply it to the lenses and polish dry with a cloth. Thanks to this, condensation on your glasses will not form as much.
