In every household you will find helpers that, through frequent use, often become worn and need to be replaced with new ones, or given the right touch of innovation. Such utensils include the household grater, knives and peelers. It is harder for us to work, for example, with a grater that is dull and does not serve us like it used to. In such a situation we have no choice but to throw it away and replace it with a new one. But take a look at a way not to waste money and to make a new grater out of an old one.
When buying a new grater, just like any household helper, we look at its quality. We expect that it will serve us at home for some time, so we choose a grater made of strong and durable material. In such a case we are confident that sharpening or getting rid of it will not be a daily task. It is also necessary to take proper care of it, so it is good to wash the grater after each use, preferably under running water, and dry it.
Fine sandpaper and water
Take a look at a very simple way to sharpen an old kitchen grater. For this you really only need a little water and sandpaper. There is no need to figure out which directions to run the sandpaper across the grater. Simply hold the grater in a horizontal position and, with quick movements, rub across the entire surface in all directions. It only takes a few seconds and the grater will be like new. However, it is not good to perform this technique for longer than 20 seconds, as the grater could be completely damaged.
Water helps
To achieve better results, you can use lukewarm water. Just wet the sandpaper and the technique does not change at all. With the help of water you can easily get a nicely sharp and effective grater again.
If you don’t have sandpaper
It may happen that you do not have sandpaper at home; in that case ordinary aluminum foil comes into play, which you will surely find in your household as well. There is nothing easier than crumpling a piece of foil into a small ball and sharpening the grater using the same technique. It is also an excellent aid when sharpening various knives, scissors and other sharp utensils.
After sharpening, it is necessary to rinse the grater thoroughly with water to remove the dirt that remains after sharpening.
