A beautifully decorated balcony certainly cannot do without beautiful, colorful flowering plants that can bring us joy throughout the whole season. If you go about it smartly, you can expect blooms until autumn, so your small balcony garden will shine for several months from spring right into the autumn period. The following guide will help you with that.
Balcony location and plant selection
Every balcony differs in the available area and orientation, which determines how much light you will have. Accordingly, it is good to choose the individual plant species and the containers in which you will grow them. It is very important to buy healthy, high-quality plants from a reliable grower. Be careful if the balcony is too exposed to wind, which can damage and break individual plants. North-facing balconies will require undemanding species that do not need as much light to bloom. You must also watch out for pests and various diseases that can trouble many different balcony flowers, so regular checks are important for their timely and effective removal before the plants suffer more significant damage.
Choosing colors
When planning which plants to place on the balcony, you must not forget to select the colors. The palette is truly diverse, because for most commonly grown plants there are a number of different cultivars and varieties that offer cheerful colors or, for example, double blooms. Ideally, there should be about 3 to 4 colors on the balcony so it is not too cluttered. Plants can also look very good in groups, complementing each other not only in color but also in flower shape and overall habit.
Size
Especially on smaller balconies you will certainly be interested in the maximum size of the plants. You probably will not be able to have tall plants if there is not enough space for them. Be careful of overcrowding the balcony, which can have a negative impact on both the overall appearance and the practical use of the space, where the flowers become more of a problem and a nuisance because they simply take up too much space.
Characteristics of selected plants
If you want a balcony that will be decorated with flowers essentially from spring through autumn, you must adapt the choice of individual plants accordingly. Alternate species that flower in different seasons so they complement each other. For example, early in spring these can be bulbous plants such as tulips, hyacinths, irises, but also other types like pansies and daisies. An absolute classic are geraniums, which bloom for a fairly long time and are ideal for window boxes because of their rich and full growth.
Don’t forget watering and fertilizing
For your plants to reward you with beautiful flowers, you must take good care of them. This primarily means choosing the right substrate and supplementing it with regular watering. From time to time, add a fertilizer intended to support flowering to the water. The best timing is the period before buds form, when you may achieve a greater number of buds precisely thanks to the newly supplied nutrients.
Add decorative elements
For the balcony to look overall aesthetic and beautiful, the individual elements must harmonize. In practice this means not only selecting suitable containers, such as pots, window boxes and similar. These should ideally be in a single color that will match the rest of the furnishings. Classics are white, brown terracotta or black variants. Various decorations, lamps and outdoor lights will also complete the overall decorative impression, and don’t forget to reserve a little space for seating so you can enjoy your own plants.
