Almost every garden owner grows raspberries. It is an undemanding shrub that will always please you in summer with its healthy and delicious fruits. However, for the bush to produce many raspberries, it needs to be cared for. Provide proper care for the raspberries and enjoy a rich harvest. Start already in August and you can look forward to sweet fruits in summer.
Characteristics of the raspberry
It is not an annual shrub, but a perennial bush. However, the shoots need to be renewed, which should be done every year. One-year-old shoots will bear fruit for you, leave those, and the two-year-old shoots you should remove each year and so on, repeatedly. Such a rule applies to common varieties. As soon as the bush has been harvested, you can begin cutting off the two-year-old shoots. It is also important to remove dry branches.
How to prune the raspberry
Before starting pruning it is necessary to loosen the so-called raspberry canes. Prepare your garden shears and with their help remove the two-year-old shoots and dry branches. The pruned twigs and shoots should be cut almost down to the ground. Also cut away branches that are thin, long and weaken the bush. And finally make the cut on the one-year-old shoots. It is enough to trim their tips so they can also grow out to the sides. Such a pruning procedure will ensure even ripening of the raspberries.
Care of the raspberry bush
After picking raspberries, you should cut off the young branches. This step is good to do at the end of August. Proper pruning is done as follows: Ten shoots remain on each bush, approximately per 1 m2. For the winter leave six to eight shoots from one bush. Continue in this way. However, care does not end in August. You should also provide the bush with protection against pests, molds and various fungi. We recommend removing raspberry bushes every five to seven years and planting or grafting new ones. If you find bad leaves on the raspberry with brown or rusty spots, cut them off and burn them. For fertilizing bushes during this period use compost or manure. Use ten kilograms of fertilizer per square meter.
